EXPRESSWAY AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW MOSS PARK INTERCHANGE RAMP

Posted By: Brian Huchings
Release Date:12/3/2009

(ORLANDO, FL) - The Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) today opened three ramps as part of the new $18.4 million State Road 417 (Central Florida Greeneway) Moss Park Road Interchange project, one of several OOCEA projects designed to improve traffic in southeast Orange County. This new interchange will bring relief to Lake Nona area residents who currently have no choice but to take the often-congested Narcoossee Road to access the Greeneway. This area includes the East Park and Lake Hart subdivisions.

The newly opened Moss Park ramps include:

  • the southbound SR 417 exit ramp to Moss Park Road;
  • the Moss Park Road entrance ramp to southbound SR 417; and
  • the Moss Park Road entrance ramp to northbound SR 417.

Originally scheduled to open early next year, construction is progressing ahead of schedule. The remaining ramp, the northbound SR 417 exit ramp to Moss Park Road, should open by the end of December.

Work continues nearby on the $14.7 million SR 417 Innovation Way Interchange project, scheduled to open by the end of year. Both interchange projects broke ground in the summer of 2008 and are scheduled to be completed on time and on budget. These new interchanges are important to those living and working in Southeast Orange County - one of the fastest growing regions of Central Florida for the last two decades.

Projects such as these are part of the Expressway Authority's comprehensive program of transportation improvements in Southeast Orange County which will help to connect the major residential, commercial and light-industry hubs in east Orange County, as well as enhance connections to the region's key transportation portals - the Orlando International Airport and Port Canaveral. The projects are also expected to improve access to the emerging Innovation Way High-Tech Corridor and the "Medical City" in Lake Nona that include the University of Central Florida’s College of Medicine and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research facility.

The Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority, established in 1963 by the state legislature, is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of a 105-mile limited-access expressway system to serve the metropolitan Orlando area. The Expressway Authority's system includes SR 408 (Spessard Lindsay Holland East-West Expressway), SR 528 (Beachline Expressway), SR 429 (Daniel Webster Western Beltway) and SR 414 (John Land Apopka Expressway). The Expressway Authority was the first to bring Electronic Toll Collection to Florida with the inception of E-PASS in 1994. Today, there are more than 490,000 E-PASS transponders in use.
